Between Horses and Humans
Between Horses and Humans is a program started by a local non-profit, (501(c) 3), the Angwin Family Foundation. The Foundation had its first summer of clinics and workshops in 2002 as a way for its founder, Terese Angwin, to share her 35 years of experience and wisdom with children and trainers. She wanted to show them a way of blending different methodologies with patience and understanding to bring willingness and harmony to the rider/horse relationship.
Our program, Between Horses and Humans, hosts six-week courses, half and full day workshops and seminars with children and horses. Our classes and workshops are conducted by professional horsemen whose philosophies match those of the Foundation. We use a variety of activities and methodologies, which include ground exercises, round arena exercises, equine body work and riding, as well as some specialty workshops and seminars to accomplish our mission: “committed to creating inspired leadership, honor and generosity of heart between horses and humans.”
Our original focus had been to work with children who owned their own horses and with those who had some horse experience, but now we are expanding our vision to include all children, even those who have never been around horses. Our target group is able-bodied children from ages 8and up, both male and female. The children who participate in our programs are selected by the program director and come from a variety of sources- equestrian trainers and instructors, equine organizations like 4-H and FFA, public and private schools, educators, equestrian non-profits and educational organizations. On average, we have worked with approximately 60-80 children per year. We run our activities at many different local equine facilities and own and use three well-trained and loving horses for the Program.
